Clonter: Opera Workshop, by Mr Houltram

The children were treated to some stunning operatic performances. The workshop culminated in the children singing and dancing with the very talented performers. It was so much fun and these videos prove it. Great memories.

The children were asked to produce their very own stage design. They worked individually on their designs before creating their final product as a group. Excellent team efforts all-round!

P4, soon to be P5 have loved art this week.

The children have explored different art techniques such as tints and tones, double dipping, sponging a background and using Brusho with shaving foam.

Year 4 World of Glass Trip, by Mr Houltram

Year 4 have just enjoyed such a brilliant trip out to the World of Glass. The day was action-packed as we learned all about the Romans and World War II. We were able to consolidate our learning from our history work. We were also lucky enough to have enjoyed a glass art session where we decorated our very own glass. If that wasn't enough, we got to watch an interactive film all about the history of glass in St. Helens and to top it all off, we were treated to a brilliant glass-blowing demonstration. Oh, we forgot to mention the fun we had in the Glass Play Zone. We did say it was action-packed but we had so much fun and behaved impeccably. We must thank our very supportive parents for giving up their own time to help us out, we are incredibly grateful. I think we'll all sleep well tonight. We hope you enjoy the photos!

Year Four did a wonderful job today!  I was so impressed!  Year four led our worship today on the theme of 'Shrove Tuesday'. They did a wonderful job of sharing the real reason behind the day as well as getting us all singing and dancing.  We all had a pancake party!  Thank you for being wonderful year four and well done to all the staff for pulling it together. 

Gloop! , by Mr Gill

In today's lesson we made Gloop! The was done as part of our science topic, 'States of Matter'. Gloop is a mixture of cornflour and water.

Sound simple?!

Something amazing happens to this incredible mixture when it is disturbed. In its main state, the mixture is a solid. However, when you touch it it turns into a liquid! We had great fun investigating the Gloop, but most importantly, we were able to use scientific vocabulary to try to explain what was happening. 

Although it was quite messy, some of us have taken the instruction sheet home and we are going to ask adults at home to have a go at making it with us! Mr Gill loves it when we take our learning home. 

States of Matter , by Mr Gill

This week we have been exploring different states of matter. We've been very inquisitive and are looking forward to finding out more. 

Some of us have already taken our learning one step further and have been exploring different states of matter at home - even explaining the different particle formations! Mr Gill is very proud of the work that is going on in P4 at the moment and we are desperate to keep this up.

Check back later on this half term - we are going to be doing some scientific experiments to explore our topic further!

Highland Games , by Mr Gill

Congratulations to a select group of Year 4 pupils who won the overall title at 'The Highland Games' event which was held at Lansbury Bridge on Wednesday. Your fellow peers and your teachers are very proud of you all - well done! 

They will be presented with their trophy and medals in assembly on Friday. 

World Religion Day incorporating British Values, by Mr Gill

Throughout this week we have been exploring a range of religions within our school community and beyond. We focused particularly on the religion of Islam. During the week we discussed some of the beliefs of the Muslim people and learned about the faiths place of origin, its sacred text, the sacred building and also the major festivals.

We had a particular focus on Islamic art and had a go at making our very own patterns. We discovered that the use of patterns is part of the way that Islamic art represents nature and objects by their spiritual qualities, not their physical and material qualities.

Some examples of our art work will be displayed in our classroom when it is finished.

We also took this opportunity to explore our British Values, in particular discussing the importance of tolerating those of different faiths and beliefs. We are in the process of making our new British Values display. Pictures of this will be uploaded upon completion.

Putting us through our paces, by Mr Gill

Mr Gill introduced us to circuit training today. It was so hard (as you can see from our pictures). 

Over the next few weeks, we will be designing our own circuit to focus on a certain area of the body. Mr Gill will try some of the stations out - we can't wait for that! 

Why don't you ask a member of P4 what type of exercises we have been doing. We will be more than happy to show you.

Remember: we should be doing 60 minutes of high intensity exercise each day. We do 30 in school during playtime, it is so important that we are doing another 30 minutes at home on days the we don't have PE. It will dramatically improve our chances of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. 

Tobacco Education , by Mr Gill

Today we had a visit from two ladies from SmokeFree St Helens - part of the NHS. The ladies made us aware of the dangers of smoking and also some of the effects it can have on our body. It turns our teeth brown, our gums bright red and sore, our finger nails yellow and makes our breath smelly. I don't know about you, but P4 were not impressed this. It has a big effect on the way we breathe as well! Choosing to smoke is not a wise choice at all.

We were given the opportunity to look at the Tar Jar which showed the amount of tar in people's bodies if they smoked 20 cigarettes a day. Speaking of smoking 20 cigarettes a day, if you did this for one year it would cost you over £3000! I'm sure you would be able to find a better way of spending this money! 

Our final activity was to guess some of the chemicals that put into a cigarette by the tobacco companies. There are over 4000 of them and they were not very pleasant at all. Ask a member of our class and they will share with you some of the disgusting things. 

Our mission is to pass on the message that stopping smoking is a very wise choice indeed. 

Dance, Drama & Singing - What a week so far., by Mr Gill

Although it is only Tuesday, P4 have taken part in some brilliant workshops ran by the Liverpool Empire theatre.

On Monday, we were very lucky to have the opportunity to work with Nat. She gave us a taster of what it’s like to be on stage (it’s quite scary when the spotlight is all on you). Nat explained to us that we can create a character using 3 very important things. Ask the children to find out what they are - I'm sure they would be delighted to demonstrate too!

We have also worked with Hayley who taught us a dance to the very well-known musical The Lion King. Mr Gill was very proud of what we produced. Our dance was performed to the soundtrack 'The Circle of Life' (One of Mr Gill's favourites).

The whole of Y4 came together to learn a song taught to us by Alan. This will be performed in assembly on Friday so watch this space!

It has been such a lovely week so far and we can't wait to see what the rest of it has in store for us.

Celebrating the Arts, by Mr Gill

Thank you to all our parents who came to see all the fantastic artwork produced by the classes of Queen's Park this afternoon. What an event it was. I'm sure you will have been impressed with all the work that the children have done this week. 

P4 have been working really hard this week ensuring that our class mosaic of the car from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was complete. We have also designed, created and evaluated our very own 'Toot Sweets'. They looked fantastic. 

We can't wait for next week already as we will working with staff from the Liverpool Empire Theatre. 

Ukelele! , by Mr Gill

Today, P4 had the opportunity to play the Ukelele. For most of us, this was the first time playing (including me). We were introduced to all the different parts of the Ukelele before the children had a go at playing a couple of tunes. We Will Rock You by Queen was a personal favourite.

The Palace of Versailles - Google Expeditions , by Mr Gill

We were treated to a magical tour of the Palace of Versailles during our 3D experience with Google expeditions. We visited grooms such as the Grand Apartments, The Congress Room and the Hall out Mirrors (our favourite). P4 were very lucky to take part in this expedition as part of the fantastic French curriculum ran at our school.

Congratulations to Yasmin and Leon who were voted our SEAL award winners for this half term by the children in P4. They really are great friends to everybody in our class and look out for each and every one of us. Well done you two - the awards are very well deserved. 

Google Expeditions , by Mr Gill

On Tuesday, we were very lucky to have Google Expedtitions bring their 3D virtual reality glasses into our school. It was AMAZING! The children had the opportunity to explore the habitats of polar bears, have a look into the solar system and take a tour around Roman ruins including the Colloseum. 

Thanks to Mrs Atherton for organising this amazing experience. As you can see from our pictures, we loved it! 

French Yoga, by Mr Gill

P4 were treated to a session of French yoga on Friday.  They were put to the test with their knowledge of body parts - Mrs Taylor has taught us well! It was a very relaxing way to end another hectic week. Hopefully the children will be able to teach people at home some of these relaxation techniques.

A week to remember, by Mr Gill

This week has been a week to remember in so many different ways.

Friday saw our whole school remembrance service which gave us all time to reflect and remember the fallen. Our two minute silence was impeccably observed by all. The children had many questions to ask about Armistace Day and we had a thought provoking discussion about it. For their homework, the children have been asked to write a poem designed to remember the fallen. I am looking forward to reading them on Monday morning.

In our maths lessons this week we have been looking at multiplication. If anything, this series of lessons taught us that it is vitally important to know our tables. It would be great if adults at home would complement the work we are doing in school by helping us learn our tables.

English has been a particular highlight of the week. We have been exploring different types of poems. The 3 types of poems we have looked at in depth are; Kennings, Haikus and Tankas. The children have written some fabulous poems and had the chance to read them out loud to their peers!

Our new guided reading book is Bill's New Frock. The children are really intrigued to find out how Bill has ended up wearing a frock!

We have been learning about the digestive system in Science. Where does our food actually go after we have put it in our mouth? We are looking forward to exploring this in more detail in next Wednesday's lesson.

In Geography, we have been focusing on the country Italy. We now know which continent it is in, its capital, what countries it borders and what oceans surround it!! We have been busy.

Congratulations to Harvey who won out Star Badge award this week for his brilliant times tables knowledge. A big well done to Ruby and Charlie who topped the Dojo charts this week!

Diwali and Key Strings - What a brilliant first day back! , by Mr Gill

We have enjoyed a fantastic start to our half term.

This morning's assembly introduced us to the celebration of Diwali. We really enjoyed Mrs Kellet's talk about it and we couldn't wait to get back to class to act out the legend of Rama and Sita. Come and ask us about the story and we will be delighted to tell you about it. We also had chance to reflect upon the things that guide us in our own lives. During he session before lunch we created our very own Rangoli patterns... They looked brilliant! 

To finish our morning we created a pathway into our classroom to symbolise how the light can guide us to learning new things every day! 

This afternoon we were treated to a fantastic musical performance which was performed by Key Strings. The children learned all about how music has evolved over many different years. Some members of our class were extremely lucky and performed at the front in the band! Have a look at our attached pictures to see more. 

This afternoon's performance had a very important message. This week is Black History week here at Queen's Park and the performance introduced us to some famous black musicians that we will be studying throughout the week. Be sure to ask the children about it when you get the chance. 

Soil shifting! , by Mr Gill

This week, P4 have been moving lots of soil from the field into the planters that have kindly been painted by our PTFA.  

We have worked extremely well together and have certainly done our bit to improve the environment of the school. It was thirsty work but the children demonstrated great perseverance in getting the job done. Mr Gill said he was impressed with the way we worked as a team!

There were some stand out gardnerners in our class who worked tirelessly to get the planters looking in tip top condition. They were: Peter, Ashleigh, Connor, Aiden and Yasmin. Alan Titchmarsh eat your heart out! 

We can't wait to see all the fabulous designs and colourful plants that will be growing come spring time.

SEAL award winners, by Mr Gill

Congratulations to Lucy and Yasmin who are our SEAL award winners for this half term.

Lucy received her award for being creative in her work while Yasmin got hers for looking after others in a caring way. Both of these awards were chosen by their peers - something which they should be very proud of. P4 are certainly proud of your achievements! Well done. 

Another busy week!, by Mr Gill

It has been another VERY busy week here in P4. The children have all worked exceptionally hard (as always).  

In our English lessons we have been editing and redrafting our newspaper reports in preparation for the final edition to be written next week. The report is all about the day those mischievous crayons took over our classroom. Some of the reports will be published online next week, so watch this space!

During our Guided Reading sessions we have been following the story of Mr Hoppy, Mrs Silver and Alfie. Written by Roald Dahl, Esio Trot is certainly a book we love. Ask a member of our class about it and we will let you into a little secret about the title.

In Maths we have been equally as busy. We have been learning about negative numbers and we have been counting back through zero! Mr Gill was so pleased with the progress we are making on this.

We ended the week on a high. Mr Gill put lots of adjectives around the room. We had to go and find an adjective which best described another member of our class. It was great to hear all the lovely things that were said.  A member of our class described Mr Gill as majestic. Safe to say he was delighted with that!

Congratulations to Joe – our star badge winner this week. Also, a big well done to Scarlett and Morgan who were our top scorers on the dojo chart.

Lastly, Happy Birthday to Lucy who celebrated her 9th birthday on Friday. We hope that you have a great time celebrating.

Saints Sky Try Experience!, by Mr Gill

I can't believe how good our day has been today! We have been so busy.

This morning we visited Langtree Park to take part in a Sky Try Experience day which is an initiative ran by St. Helens RFLC! #COYS

The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning and took part in lots of different activities. Some of the activities included: Practising our tackling against some of Saints academy graduates, visiting the changing room and trying on a Saints shirt. We also visited the trophy room to see all of the trophies that Saints have won over the years and then we went into the stadium and to see the pitch! After all of this we were then put through our paces, testing out the rugby skills that Mr Ward has been teaching us.

The morning finished with the children exploring the eat well plate. They came up with ways in which they could lead a healthy active lifestyle as well as consuming a balanced diet.
