European Day of Languages, by Miss Hughes

Date: 28th Sep 2016 @ 8:56pm

Eine Sprache ist niemals genug (which means "One language is never enough") and Mrs Taylor and the staff and children of Queen's Park couldn't agree more! A love of language is something that is embedded into our curriculum and we are very lucky to have Mrs Taylor and her infectious enthusiasm and passion for languages.

We loved our German focus this year and what a fantastic, fun-filled day we had in Year 6!

Our day kicked off with an assembly led by Mrs Taylor. We were particularly impressed with Mr Warner, Mrs Connor and Ms Moss' Tongue Twister Challenge! Who would have thought we had such incredible linguists working at Queen's Park?

We then had an amazing dance session with Miss Emma where we learnt the Waltz. I forgot I was in the school hall for a moment and genuinely believed I was on Strictly. Q6 were out of this world!

We then spent some time researching Germany and the German culture. We found out some great facts from - German Nobel prize winners to famous German companies. We were keen to find out about German foods before we enjoyed our German sausages for lunch.

After lunch we went to Cowley for the afternoon. We had a Skype chat with a school in Hanover. Charlie and Owen were brave enough to show off their German dance moves! The children at the school taught us lots of German words and phrases. We came back to Queen's Park feeling confident with counting to 20 in German and knowing the German alphabet. Q6 will be more than ready to begin their German lessons when they go to Cowley next year.

So much learning and so much fun. Auf wiedersehen! :)

Here are some pictures of us enjoying the Waltz.

The CURRENT Year 6 children are bright SPARKS , by Miss Hughes

Date: 28th Sep 2016 @ 8:18pm

I told Q6 how electricity is measured and they were like WATT! But when they understood I was ex-STATIC!

Maybe you have already gathered that Q6 have been learning all about Electricity in their Science lessons!

We carried out an investigation to associate the brightness of a bulb with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit. They then compared and gave reasons for variations in how components function such as the brightness of bulbs.Q6 can recognise symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram... AND they can tell younger children exactly how dangerous electicity can be. A very busy couple of weeks in Science!

Then after a really long day full of science fun - I drove home in my VOLTS-wagon... and that's me all out of electricity puns.

They have been truly fab, sensible and great scientists. Well done Q6 :)

Another busy week..., by Miss Hughes

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 4:47pm

My poor class haven't stopped this week! We have managed to cram in - a football lesson, a dance lesson, a squash lesson, an extended writing session,  two science lessons, a french lesson, several Writing, Reading and Maths lessons... and a few tests have been thrown in as well! On top of all this, Year 6 have also been practising their assembly, which will be on Monday at 9:15 (all Y6 parents welcome! We would love to see you there).

What I have learnt about my class over the past couple of weeks is that they are always happy, do not stop smiling and are always keen to work. Let's hope we can keep this up all year! You are fabulous!

Have a great weekend x

Have a look at our PE sessions this week:

Welcome to Q6!, by Miss Hughes

Date: 9th Sep 2016 @ 5:28pm

I'd like to say a huge, happy welcome to my lovely new class and their families.

Well, what a week we've had! It's been so busy - does not feel like we've had 6 weeks off!

We have been preparing for our 'School Values' assembly which is in a couple of weeks time. We feel it is important to share our school values to remind everyone what makes us so special and unique at Queen's Park. Our values underpin the ethos of our school and we feel we have a responsibility to share them with the Reception children as they embark on their Queen's Park journey. We are also excited to introduce ourselves to our buddies, who we will be taking under our wing, being there for them and helping them to grow!

In English, we have been looking at The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. We have done a great job analysing it and we have dealt with some very tricky vocabulary! In Maths we have been working on our Place Value up to millions... we will soon be ready to work with numbers up to a billion - and use our Maths Mastery approach to challenge ourselves to some problem solving and reasoning activities.

We enjoyed reading Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl in Guided Reading - it is Roald Dahl day coming up and we wanted to celebrate the incredible stories he has written, including those short stories which were aimed at adults. We have been able to sequence the story, as well as discuss Roald Dahl's use of language and the impact it has on us as a reader. We actually felt really sorry for Mary Maloney - we laughed along with her at the very end of the story!

Busy busy busy... but loads of fun!

Bring on the rest of the year! It's going to be a GREAT one :)

Miss Hughes and Q6 x

Leaver's Service at Liverpool Cathedral, by Miss Ellis

Date: 14th Jun 2016 @ 9:19am

Yesterday afternoon, all the children and staff from year 6 attended the Leaver's Service at Liverpool Cathedral. It was a very emotional start to our classes getting ready to begin their journeys towards high school (Miss Ellis certainly had a tear or two in her eye!) Euan and Rebecca (our head boy and girl) carried the school banner through the cathedral and presented it at the alter, Kenny hung our prayers for the future on the prayer tree and Tansy received a candle from the Bishop which we will now use as part of our leaver's service in school. During the service, the children received a blessing from the clergy and our children were lucky enough to be blessed by our own Miss Hope who is a lay reader. The children behaved superbly and were a real credit to the school and their parents. A lovely afternoon😃⛪️

Intra School Competitions, by Mr Ward

Elf update - P6, by Mrs Platt

Date: 10th Dec 2015 @ 11:26am

Just when you thought it was safe to decorate the Christmas tree...

Class P6 have only just managed to get their elf under control and sort out the chaos that has descended since he arrived! Kristophe Sparklebum has been up to all sorts of mischief...messing up the classroom, hiding equipment, stealing Miss Ellis' secret sweet stash and even locking staff in the stockroom (poor Mrs Baron!) We have discovered that the reason for his bad behaviour was because Father Christmas sent him to check out some very naughty children last year and he has picked up some terrible habits. Fortunately, we have been setting a much better example and have been showing him the error of his ways by writing stories using flashback techniques. Hopefully peace and tranquility will be restored to year six in time for the Christmas party!

Buddy Assembly , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 30th Sep 2015 @ 11:00pm

Thank you to everyone that came along today to share in our Buddy assembly.  This is a very special scheme we run at Queen's Park.  Our Y6 children are paired up with our Reception children for the full year. They do lots of different activities together to support our Reception children in their first year of 'big' school.

It is a big responsibility and one I know our year six children will live up to

Raising Aspirations at Queen's Park , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 5th Jul 2015 @ 10:06pm

This year, Y5 and Y6 at Queen's Park have been working with St Helens Chamber on a business enterprise scheme.  The final session was held today.  We had a 'Careers Carousel' in the hall.  Over 15 different companys/jobs  were represented from Nursing to Ice-Skating to Asda.  The children prepared questions to ask the different companys.  This gave our children a real flavour of the world of work and hopefully inspire some of them to look further into a particular career.

Another first for Queen's Park!  One of our core values is aspiration and I really feel that this activity enable our children to at least start to think about work and how important it is to choose the right career.

Thank you to Natale from the St Helens Chamber who helped to organsie and Mrs Platt from school who is as ever, always on hand to help!

Careers carousel , by Mrs Platt

Date: 4th Jul 2015 @ 8:00am

We held our first ever careers carousel here at Queen's Park on Friday afternoon and it was a great success!

Massive thanks should go to Natalie from St Helens Chamber who invited a wide variety of businesses to our event and to our Queen's Park parents and carers who volunteered their time to come and speak with our children.

The children were able to move around the carousel and ask questions about different careers and professions. There were a variety of industries and professionals who attended, e.g. ASDA, M&S, Silver Blades Ice Rink, DWP, QVC and Clarks to name but a few.

Check out our photos below...
