Arts Week ... The Show Must Go On , by Miss Fisher

Date: 13th Jan 2017 @ 3:25pm

After a busy first week back in school our arts extravaganza continued this week with Samba, drama, dance and a singing workshop.

We had a fantastic musician visit us to teach us all about Samba music.  He told us Samba comes from a country called Brazil and it is good to dance along to.  We found out about the different instruments used in a Samba band and the rhythms they play.  By the end of the session we were performing just like a real Samba band.

Our dance and drama sessions were both based around the musical Oklahoma! and culminated in a brilliant barn dance.

Through our singing workshop we learnt a song to perform at the Celebration of the Arts assesmbly with the whole school.

Textile Art, by Miss Glover

Date: 6th Jan 2017 @ 3:17pm

We have been learning about the West End Muscial Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Charlie's Grandad Joe wrote to us asking if we would make him and the other grandparents a brand new bed cover. We decided to base the design on sweets from the story. We designed it by drawing it, working with a partner and then finally selecting suitable materials to add to our very own patch. Check out our final product!

Grandad Joe loved it!

There were lots of different sweets for us to taste test and we came up with exciting

adjectives to describe the flavour, aroma, texture and appearance of them.

This coming week, throughout school, we will be using ClassDojo.

Your child should have brought home a password for you to log onto the app on Friday.

Dojos will now be awarded instead of team points so that you can have instant feedback once your child has been awarded a dojo ... dojos can also be deducted for unacceptable behaviour (but we are sure this won't happen in Year 1)!

Please be paitent with us (well, Miss Fisher) while we get to grips with this new electornic system (I'm sure Miss Glover will get me up to speed).

If you have any questions please feel free to ask a member of the Year 1 staff and we will try our best to answer any questions.

Let's get dojoing!!

Reading Adventures , by Miss Fisher

Date: 9th Oct 2016 @ 10:00am

This week in Guided Reading Year 1 will be reading this book.  It is all about a little boy who recieves a toy bus as a present.  We, as readers, are taken on an exciting journey through the little boy's imaginative play.

Through our Guided Reading sessions we are 'getting good at' relating our own experiences to what we read or what others read to us.  So to help your child get good at this ... play, play, play!  First will be asking the children about a time they got a present and then to talk about the imaginative play they enjoy; it could be winning the toy car Grand Prix, search and resuce with helicopters and figures or emergency vet rescue.

European Day of Laguages, by Miss Fisher

Date: 2nd Oct 2016 @ 3:27pm

What a wunderbar day! That's wonderful in German (thank you Google!).

The day began with a whole school assesmbly.  Madam Taylor took us on an exciting adventure around Europe; playing games and speaking different languages.  Our favourite part was when some of the teachers attempted to say tongue twisters in different languages.  They actually did quite well!

Back in class we looked more closely at the language and culture of Germany; learning some simple words and phrases and finding out about school life and famous landmarks .

We then looked at the German Brothers Grimm.  We found out that these brothers were interested in folk and fairy tales and were one of the first people to publish them in books.  The children were surprised by how so many of their favourite stories were written down by the Grimm brothers.  Together we read Rapunzel and the children were given the opportunity to join in with lots of creative activies.

In the afternoon the children listened to some music from an opera based on Hansel and Gretel and they learnt a dance in the traditional German style.

To finish off our day we had a German food tasting picnic.

Wacky Races!, by Miss Fisher

Date: 27th Sep 2016 @ 11:52pm

The children have been learning to use ordinal numbers to describe the position of objects and people. In our continuous provision we have set up a race track and the children have used the cars to race so that we can practise the vocabulary.  We have been finding lots of different opportunities to use this vocabulary in context throughout the school day.

Gold fever in P1, by Miss Fisher

Date: 28th Jun 2016 @ 9:31pm

While Pirate Pete has been in search of his favourite booty, gleaming gold, the children of P1 have been exploring an artist who also had a liking for gold.  The children used viewfinders to focus in on the patterns used in the Gustav Klimt portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer.  They then created their own patterns, using gold paint, which will be collaged together to make own own version of the well known painting.

Candy Island Ahoy! , by Miss Fisher

Date: 28th Jun 2016 @ 9:03pm

Pirate Pete, the main character from our story this week, has washed ashore Candy Island on his voyage for gold!  The children had a taste sensation when trying weird and wonderful sweets.  From this activity we gathered adjectives to use in our writing.

Whatever floats your boat ..., by Miss Fisher

Date: 18th Jun 2016 @ 1:45pm

In the story we have been reading this week The Jolley Roger family become stranded in Dull-on-Sea, a quiet, seaside town, while their boat is fixed. In P1 we have been investigating which materials and what shape of vessels float best to help the family repair the shipwreck.

Shipwreck in P1! , by Miss Fisher

Date: 18th Jun 2016 @ 1:34pm

Throughout the infant classes we have been reading a story called The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle.  We have been getting to know the main character Matilda. She is a lonely little girl who longs for another child to play with. The old, seaside town she lives in is full of boring grown ups and it seems that nothing ever happens until ... The Jolley Rogers' are shipwrecked in Dull-on-Sea!

Well, that's just what happened in Class P1 too! A pirate ship came crashing into our classroom and on it we found gold, jewels, cutlasses and treasure maps.

EURO 2016, by Mrs Roberts

Date: 17th Jun 2016 @ 12:40pm

We were kindly given the opportunity to join as a school to watch the Euro 2016 England game in the hall on the big screen. What great fun we had!  We had a hall full of banners, flags and lots of children cheering on their Country. What a shame home time came along before the last goal. England 2 Wales 1.
COME ON ENGLAND!

(What a shame for the little crew who obviously didnt get the result they were after as they were Wales supporters.)
