Seed dispersal., by Mrs Atherton

Date: 30th Jan 2017 @ 12:17pm

This week in Science, the children have written as though they were a seed and explained how they travel.  The two writers that I enjoyed reading the most were Ruby's and Nathan's.

I thought that you might like to read them yourselves:

The Story of the Palm Tree.

This is my story.

First, I was just an unispiring soul of a seedling. I just sat there for days and days with my brothers and sisters. I never did anything. But then...the wind swept through my mother's branches and leaves and then I fell. It was just like a bad dream that I had dreaded would happen. It was mostly a black-out but I remembered most of it.

As the sun began to sweep across the sky, my eyes opened and then I realised that I was floating. But on what? It was water! I didn't know what to do. It was like I was a boat.

A few weeks had passed and then...I hurt my head, which really hurt  by the way. Suddenly, I found myself under the ground. It was actually like a dream come true because...I grew into a giant coconut tree.

I guess time does pay off after all.

Ruby Friar.

I am a Maple Seed.

I am a maple seed. I was dangling on my tree when suddenly, a gust of wind swept me off my branch. I thought I was a goner but my wing shot me though the sky like a helicopter. Then a bird swooped past me and picked me up. I was at the edge of the park, the bird dropped me and I fluttered down to the ground.

After 20 -30 years, I grew into a maple tree (acer) and ever since then, I've been dropping my seeds ever since. My seeds will make the same journey as me each year, every new year.

Nathan Trainer.

I hope you enjoyed reading two of our seed adventures.

British Values, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 19th Jan 2017 @ 5:11pm

In Year 5 this week, we have been discussing values, looking at our own values and British Values. The five main British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

We then thought about how those values are represented within Queen's Park School. We have very interesting ideas. We will use our thoughts to create a class display. Photographs to follow upon completion.

Year 5  then had a frank and open discussion about the video and how it made them feel. The children commented about what we could do as a school to have a positive impact and ensure hate crime never has a place in our school.

A very informative session for all of the children.

Arts Celebration drama, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 12th Jan 2017 @ 4:53pm

So far, the children have had singing, arts and dance with the Liverpool Empire. Today, they had a drama session.

The children were shown how to warm up their bodies and their voices and were introduced to dramatic tension!

In groups, the children had to perform, in a style of their chosing, creating an advert to sell the people in their group and say why they were individuals. The performances used a range of drama, singing and dancing and they all collaborated effectively for a great final performance to the class.

Well done Q5, I really enjoyed seeing your creativity today.smiley

Arts Celebration, by Mrs Atherton

On Friday they will perform in a whole school end of Arts Celebration finale.

Arts Fortnight Day 1, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 4th Jan 2017 @ 4:56pm

As an introduction to our Arts Fortnight Year 5 began by learning to play the ukulele.

Mr Garner from the School's Music Service came into Year 5 to teach the children how to play the ukulele. They were taught about the parts of the  instrument and where their play and eat positions were. First, they were shown how to strum and then how to read musical notation. The classes played to Pagoda and then my Dog has Fleas.  Eventually the children progressed to playing chords and playing to a backing track. They were taught how to play chords and that the strings were C,G,E and A.

Year 5 have had a great time appreciating the musical aspects of our Arts Fortnight and playing the ukulele.

As part of the Arts Fortnight, the children are looking at musicals. Year 5 have loved the musical elements of Annie and have spent the afternoon singing in groups and performing scenes from this musical.

Willowbrook fundraising event , by Miss Stubbs

Date: 1st Dec 2016 @ 5:58pm

Today year 5 had a visit from Pam Williams and Diane Humphreys who work for Willowbrook Hospice.

The children discovered facts about the hospice such as: how many patients can be looked after there, how much money the hospice needs per year, which is an incredible 4 million pounds, what the staff and volunteers have to do in order to raise that amount of money because they only recieve 1 million per year from the government and how many charity shops they have located around St Helens and Knowsley.

The children must plan a fundraising event in order to raise as much money as possible to support Willowbrook hospice.

The children are very excited and would like us to pass on the message about our events to support the hospice, which will be taking place after Christmas. Details to follow.

The behaviour and manners or the children were excellent  throughout the day. A personal note of thanks for the staff who gave up time away from their own families to support your children: thank you Mrs Ashton, Miss Fishwick and Mrs Connor.

It was a little cool over night but other than that it was a great trip from beginning to end. Feedback from the children has been 100% positive.

Thank you to Mrs Kellet, who at the end of her long day came a read a bedtime story to the children until 9.00. pm.

Crucial Crew, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 16th Oct 2016 @ 3:36pm

This week, Year 5 had a great afternoon at Langtree Park. They met different professionals involved in Emergency Services within St. Helens.

There were 6 different workshops throughout the afternoon.

Road safety

In this workshop he children had to investigate an accident scene, they had to work out:

  • What had happened
  • What were the possible injuries.?
  • How could they prevent this type of accident form happening again?

We appear to have a wealth of medical knowledge in Year 5 as they were able to diagnose everything from head injuries to broken bones.

Merseyside Police

In this session the children were asked:

What is an emergency?

When do you ring 999?

What is the non-emergency number?

Which would you ring given the scenarios they were presented with.

There were also able to role paly an emergency call and the children also discussed hoax calls.

We discovered that 999 is a free number that can be dialled even if a telephone has no credit.

The Ranger Service

The Rangers presented dangers that could be in and around public play areas.

Using the pictures, the children spotted dangers.

They discussed rubbish including glass and syringes that may be laying around. The children were taught when an adult is the most appropriate course of action.

The Rangers also explained that motorbikes not allowed in parks and that fires in parks can cause destruction and death to animals in the area.

Stranger danger was highlighted, the children were told to stay with friends, tell an adult were they are and don’t wander off alone in secluded areas.

Home safety

Dangers around the home were explained in this session. The children had to spot the hazards.

Ask your child which is the most dangerous room in the home:

  1. The bathroom
  2. The kitchen
  3. The living room

Bonfire night fire safety

Staying safe on bonfire night was the key message in this workshop. The children viewed a re-enactment of an actual event that occurred in Merseyside where a teenager was badly injured.

Important things to remember were that others might put you in danger.

Stay well back from fires and bonfire night.

Stop, drop and roll if clothes catch fire.

British transport police

The Transport Police explained the dangers of playing on the railway lines or flying kites near electrified over-head lines.

Safety on the trains and train stations was made clear to the children, including staying behind the yellow line until the train comes to a standstill.

The children were a credit to our school as their behaviour was excellent and their questions and answers showed real thought and consideration. Well done Year 5, you made us proud.

Science, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 11th Oct 2016 @ 1:01pm

The children have had a really interesting morning investigating themal insulators and conductors. We created a fair test to check which material was the best thermal insulator from a range of materials.

Ask your child which was the best thermal insulator; foil, paper, bubble wrap or fake fur.

A super Science morning.
