Elf mischief, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 9th Dec 2015 @ 2:33pm

The elves, in Y5, have been up to lots of mischief and have kept the children entertained. They have disorganised the pencil pots, been sticking 'selfies' around the classroom and turning up the most unexpected places.

On Monday there was great concern as the children discovered that the elves had lost their magic because they had been touched by human hands. After reasearching some Christmas films, the children decided to fill the elves with Christmas Spirit by creating a Christmas grotto and sending messages that they believe in elves to help the magic return. Thankfully, on Tuesday morning, the magic had been restored to the elves and little envelopes of Christmas jokes were left as a thank you by the elves. heart

Two unexpected visitors in Year 5 , by Miss Stubbs

Date: 1st Dec 2015 @ 9:05pm

Year 5 have had two unexpected visitors.

The elves have been given names in each class: Zoomer and Edgar.

The children welcomed the elves and are trying hard to be good as they know they are under the watchful eye of the elves who will be reporting back to Santa. However, there were unexpected events this afternoon as the elves seem to be up to mischief. Year 5 are going to keep a watchful eye on any further events.

Crucial Crew, by Mrs Atherton

Date: 20th Oct 2015 @ 7:03pm

The Year 5 children have been a credit to the school today attending the Crucial Crew event at Langtree Park. Miss Stubbs and Mrs Atherton would like to express how very proud we were of their behaviour. smiley

Below is a brief overview of their day, please ask your children what they have learned in their workshops.

Crucial Crew 20th October, 2015

Year 5 attended six workshops at Crucial Crew, these were:

  1. Road safety.
  2. E-safety.
  3. Accidents in the home.
  4. Fire safety.
  5. Train safety.
  6. The Ranger service.

In the road safety session, the children attended a ‘RTA’ (road traffic accident), they had to investigate what had happened and infer the possible causes of the accident. They then decided what steps could be taken to avoid this type of accident happening again.

For E-Safety, the children watched a video that highlighted the dangers of the internet, they then discussed how they could stay safe on line and what to do if they ever felt unsafe.

The children were also made aware of how to identify hazards that could cause accidents in the home. They were taught how to make an emergency call and what numbers to call for emergency and non-emergency (999 and 101). Hoax calls were explained as a waste of time and resources.

The Fire Department showed a ‘mock-up’ video of a boy being injured on Bonfire night, this was based on a true story. They then discussed the dangers of fireworks and the children were made aware of STOP, DROP and ROLL if clothing catches fire.

The British Transport Police explained the best ways to cross rail tracks, such as bridges or subways, the group used the models to spot dangers around train tracks. At a railway station, the importance of staying behind the yellow line was explained.  Photographs that showed damage from stone throwing were given to the children to make them think of consequences of actions.

The Ranger Service explained all the services that the Rangers provide and gave the children an awareness of hazards that may arise in local parks, such as: not swimming in ponds or lakes, fires, strangers, needles or syringes, broken glass and litter and climbing trees.

Raising Aspirations at Queen's Park , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 5th Jul 2015 @ 10:06pm

This year, Y5 and Y6 at Queen's Park have been working with St Helens Chamber on a business enterprise scheme.  The final session was held today.  We had a 'Careers Carousel' in the hall.  Over 15 different companys/jobs  were represented from Nursing to Ice-Skating to Asda.  The children prepared questions to ask the different companys.  This gave our children a real flavour of the world of work and hopefully inspire some of them to look further into a particular career.

Another first for Queen's Park!  One of our core values is aspiration and I really feel that this activity enable our children to at least start to think about work and how important it is to choose the right career.

Thank you to Natale from the St Helens Chamber who helped to organsie and Mrs Platt from school who is as ever, always on hand to help!

Police Visit Y5, by Mrs Kellett

Date: 2nd Jul 2015 @ 7:59pm

On Thursday, we were visited by the Community Police to talk to the children all about keeping themselve safe around the community and on the internet.  I was amazed by how much the children knew about the internet and it really made me aware of how vulnerable our children are in the new world of technology.  Please keep tabs on your child's use of the internet.  It is so important!

Maths Winners, by Mrs Kellett

Date: 24th Jun 2015 @ 10:16pm

Today, four of our year five boys went to St John Vianney to take part in a 'Maths Challenge' day.  They took part in lots of different maths activities against 9 other schools.  I was delighted to find out when I picked them up that they had actually won the whole competition!  A fantastic achievement. Well done boys. smiley

iPads , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 4th Jun 2015 @ 9:36pm

I had the pleasure this morning of dropping in to some lessons to see what great work was going on in the classrooms. I saw lots of great maths work and some good discussions about improving our writing. I went into y5 and they had our new bank of iPads out. They were learning to write algorithms (commands) to move figures in a game. I was so impressed with the children's ability and the confidence with using the new technology to further their learning.

Well done Mrs Atherton and Y5

Year 5 Viking Day, by Mr Helsby

Date: 20th Apr 2015 @ 4:55pm

Today we spent the day with a real life Viking! We even dressed up as Vikings! He told us all about where they came from and how they lived their lives. He also gave us a spear and a shield and shown us how to march into battle! We are now definitely Viking experts. We had great fun and will not forget our amazing experience.
