Year 4 World of Glass Trip, by Mr Houltram

Date: 6th Jul 2017 @ 7:06pm

Year 4 have just enjoyed such a brilliant trip out to the World of Glass. The day was action-packed as we learned all about the Romans and World War II. We were able to consolidate our learning from our history work. We were also lucky enough to have enjoyed a glass art session where we decorated our very own glass. If that wasn't enough, we got to watch an interactive film all about the history of glass in St. Helens and to top it all off, we were treated to a brilliant glass-blowing demonstration. Oh, we forgot to mention the fun we had in the Glass Play Zone. We did say it was action-packed but we had so much fun and behaved impeccably. We must thank our very supportive parents for giving up their own time to help us out, we are incredibly grateful. I think we'll all sleep well tonight. We hope you enjoy the photos!

Year Four Class Worship , by Mrs Kellett

Date: 28th Feb 2017 @ 5:02pm

Year Four did a wonderful job today!  I was so impressed!  Year four led our worship today on the theme of 'Shrove Tuesday'. They did a wonderful job of sharing the real reason behind the day as well as getting us all singing and dancing.  We all had a pancake party!  Thank you for being wonderful year four and well done to all the staff for pulling it together.

Q4 HAVE TALENT!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 27th Jan 2017 @ 2:13pm

I'm sure the children will sleep well this weekend. Did they tell you about our circuit training session in PE this week? It was tough but fun keeping fit.

The children have been producing some excellent writing once again this week. We have immersed ourselves into our new text 'Flotsam' and the language we are producing from this great picture book has to be seen to be believed! Even Alan Peat has liked it on Twitter, go Q4!!

In Maths we keep going with our fraction work - the children can now work out fractions of amounts and know the formula for finding the answer, test them on it! We can also order and round decimals with two decimal places. Is there anything we can't do!?

States of Matter is our new topic in Science. We have a good understanding of solids, liquids and gases and next week we will be investigating if a gas has weight using fizzy pop! Can't wait for that.

We'll also get to grips with our new Geography topic which is rivers starting with the journey of a river.

Well done to Ryley, Zach, Jacob, Megan and Ethan who attended the Highland Games at Lansbury Bridge and WON the whole thing (pics on Twitter) Very proud of them! Codie topped our Dojo chart and won our Star of the Week! What a superstar.

See you next week.

Arts Fortnight, by Mr Houltram

Date: 13th Jan 2017 @ 3:32pm

Well what can I say. Arts Fortnight truly has been AMAZING! Q4 really have excelled in the arts and I'm very proud of their achievements. We've been singing, dancing, acting and have produced some excellent artwork. We are very lucky to have worked with the Liverpool Empire all week and it's safe to say that our children have talent, and lots of it! I have attached some collages of our experiences but please look at my twitter page @mrhoultramqp and check out the videos too.

It might have been Arts Fortnight but there is always room for some English and Maths. In English we have been writing a film review for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Our finished pieces are fabulous. In Maths we have been introduced to fractions. We have been using diagrams to recognise families of common equivalent fractions. We can add fractions with the same denominator and can even turn improper fractions into mixed numbers. Next week we will be solving some problems involving fractions and looking at tenths and hundredths.

We will begin our Science topic next week also which is 'States of Matter'. We will begin by describing properties of solids, liquids and gases and will be sorting them too. We will also continue with our new text for Guided Reading which is 'Beetle Boy.' It's very mysterious - ask the children all about it.

That's it for now but check back next week to see what we've been up to, and don't forget to check out those videos on Twitter!

See you next week

Chitty Chitty Teaser, by Mr Houltram

Date: 5th Jan 2017 @ 3:22pm

The children have been busy all week putting together their very own work of art for our Arts Exhibition this Friday. We don't want to give too much away but here are a few pictures to get those Chitty Chitty tastebuds going. Don't forget to pop in tomorrow (Friday 7th January) to check out the children's work. You won't be disappointed!

Truly Scrumptious!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 5th Jan 2017 @ 3:16pm

Q4 have been inspired by the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang this week. We have loved the soundtrack, so much so that we decided to make some truly scrumptious sweets! I have to say that the children's imaginations and creativity were artumptuous! I think you'll agree.

Anyone for ukulele?, by Mr Houltram

Date: 5th Jan 2017 @ 3:10pm

Q4 put to the test, by Mr Houltram

Date: 9th Dec 2016 @ 6:46pm

Test week this week for Q4. All the children took them in their strides and I can say I wasn't  surprised with our results because the children never cease to amaze me. It's been a long term and the children have worked incredibly hard but it sure is paying off.

We still managed to squeeze some Maths in and tackled perimeter. The children now know the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes. We spent Friday with some challenges such as 'Can a shape have the same area and perimeter?' The children even created their own challenges and enjoyed investigating.

For our English I introduced the children to 'Coming Home' by Michael Morpurgo. We enjoyed listening to Michael himself telling us the story. We had some discussions about the text and created an information poster all about Robins. Did you know that the robin was declared Britain's National Bird on December 15th, 1960? The children did a great job using lots of organisational devices for their posters. Next week, we will be comparing the story to an advert - can't wait for that!

Well done to Josh who won Star Badge and Deborah who topped our Dojo chart. We wish Enola lots of luck this weekend who auditions for Britain's Got Talent! How exciting is that. We know you'll do Q4 proud. Good Luck!

See you next week!

Where did the week go?, by Mr Houltram

Date: 25th Nov 2016 @ 1:14pm

So what have we been up to? What haven’t we been up to more like. We sure know how to cram a week of learning in!

For our English we have been planning a biography all about famous poet, William Wordsworth. The children are really making a conscious effort to create their own style of writing which is pleasing to see. Their finished pieces are just great!

In our Maths lessons we turned our attention to division. It sure was tricky but Q4 are very resilient and stuck at it. For our Maths Meetings this week our focus has been Roman Numerals. We are very close to knowing them all up to 100.

Science saw us explore teeth. They have some interesting names like incisors and molars. We looked at the different types of teeth and their functions and managed to compare our own to those of carnivores and herbivores.

In our History we found out what the Romans liked to do for entertainment. Ask the children all about it. We also found out about Roman Gods and Goddesses such as Venus, Juno and Minerva.
In Geography we researched the country Italy and came up with a fact poster. The children worked in pairs to produce some excellent informative posters.

Well done to our Star Badge winner this week, Codie Start, who has really impressed me with her writing. Ruby, Alexia, Jia, Matthew and Kacey all scored 100% on their spelling whilst Alexia and Hayden topped our Dojo charts. A huge Well Done to all.

See you next week!

Go Go Go!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 19th Nov 2016 @ 1:02pm

Q4 have worked so hard this week. I introduced the children to Lucy Gray, a poem written by William Wordsworth. We spent time simplifying some of the language - it was written in 1799 after all!

Our aim was to write a story opening and my oh my... the results were fantastic. I'm so proud of everyone for their efforts in writing this week.

In Maths we looked at multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. We also tackled associative law. I think we've covered just about every way of multiplication there is! It will certainly go a long way to making us much more fluent in our Maths.

Did the children tell you about our bulb planting? We also focused on the song 'Man that can't be moved' by The Script in our Guided Reading. The children's interpretations were excellent. Amazing imaginations. Ask them all about it!

If that wasn't enough, we managed to describe the journey of the digestive system. We did this as a shared write and embedded our understanding with a very tense game of 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'. Lots of the children mistook Chris Tarrant for Donald Trump!! Needless to say, Q4 reached a million, (phone a friend and 50/50s came in handy!)

A special mention to Enola, who has really made a huge effort to improve her handwriting this week, you've made me and Miss Monsvoll really proud!

A huge well done to Sophie, Ruby, Boo, Maddison, Rory, Enola, Abigail, Alexia and Jia with 100% on their spellings!

Abigail was a very worthy winner of our Star Badge! A great role model for Q4. A huge well done to all!

We'll be writing a biography all about William Wordsworth next week. Teeth in Science, Italy in Geography and division in Maths are all on the agenda. Go, go, go!!

See you next week!

Non-stop learning!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 12th Nov 2016 @ 5:53pm

What a week! So where do I start? Let's start with English. The children have been looking at lots of different poems all week; Kennings, Haikus and Tankas. We finished the week producing some thoughtful Cinquain poems to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. Ask the children all about the different syllable patterns.

In Maths we have been delving even deeper into our multiplications. We now know all about commutativity and distributive law - sounds tricky but the children excelled! The children also looked at factors and products whilst we focused on fractions in our Maths Meetings - ask the children all about it.

In Science we have been exploring the digestive system. The children were able to identify the parts of the digestive system and produced an interactive worksheet to learn the functions of each part.

We have started our new text 'Bill's New Frock' for our Guided Reading. Poor Billy has woken up as a girl and his Mum has sent him off to school in a frilly pink dress! Goodness knows what's in store for him.

Well done to Alexia, Abigail, Deborah, Emily, Kacey, Maddison, Matthew, Rory, Ruby and Zach who all achieved 100% on their spellings. Jayden topped the dojo charts with a huge 18 dojos whilst Zach was a worthy winner of our Star Badge award. A special mention to Hayden too who has achieved yellow belt in Kickboxing. Well done Hayden!

Next week we will be exploring a poem by William Wordsworth called Lucy Gray. It tells the story about a young girl who went out one evening in a storm never to return. We will turn our attention to division in Maths, looking at teeth in Science, (open wide!) and will be producing a fact file all about Italy in Geography. Not sure how we'll fit it all in but Q4 never cease to amaze me.

I'll upload some pics very soon so keep checking back.

Action packed!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 5th Nov 2016 @ 1:38pm

..... and breathe.. Wow we have had one action-packed week. We got our Geography off to a terrific start and now know all seven continents. The children can also tell you where some of the European countries are located - their atlas skills were great!

We kick-started the week with a performance of the story of Rama and Sita, we hope you enjoyed the photos. Q4 are brilliant performers and they never cease to amaze me!

In English we have been looking at segregation in the 1950's. We focused on 'The Little Rock Crisis', which occurred in Arkansas in the USA. The children have written some excellent persuasive pieces arguing why segregation is wrong. It tied in perfectly with our Black History Week. The children showed sympathy, empathy and thoughtfulness in their writing which was most pleasing. Please ask the children all about it.

In Maths we have been looking at representing multiplications. This week we have been able to represent our answers using bar models as well as with place value counters. It will certainly help us to become more fluent in multiplication - column method and distributive law next week!

Next week we look forward to our new text, 'Bill's New Frock' by Anne Fine for our Guided Reading sessions. Can't wait for that! We will also be exploring poetry in our English lessons and we'll be looking at the digestive system in science. Lots to look forward to!

Well done to Kacey, Izzy, Sophie, Josh, Emily, Alexia, Boo and Abigail who shone in their drama production - Q4 are very proud of their talents. Izzy topped out dojo chart whilst Deborah, Sophie and Boo won our Secret Student prizes. Ask the children all about it!

See you next week!

Diwali, by Mr Houltram

Date: 31st Oct 2016 @ 8:17pm

Q4 depicted the story of Rama and Sita today as we focused our morning lessons around Diwali. The children worked as a team to represent each scene through drama.  As you can see, the children had great fun performing. Their finished products were very impressive!

Happy Holidays!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 22nd Oct 2016 @ 9:14am

We made it! The children can can enjoy a well-earned rest after all their hard work. All the children really have made a fantastic start to Q4. I'm very proud of all their achievements and it was lovely to share them with you at our parents evening, thank you so much for your continued support.

Some highlights this half term include some amazing writing from our text 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. The children written some great letters and have just finished a brilliant news report - some of the vocabulary I'm seeing in the children's work is amazing.

Our Maths is really coming along. The children have enjoyed lots of work on place value and addition and subtraction. We will be moving onto multiplication and division after half term so keep learning those tables guys!

We have some great scientists in Q4 and the children have enjoyed our topic 'Living Things and their Habitats'. They have produced some great classification keys and endangered species posters. I'm sure that the children will love our new topic 'Animals including Humans', which we will commence in the first week back.

There is so much to look forward to. We will be studying Italy in our Geography lessons and will continue with our Romans topic in History. The children will be creating their very own Roman catapult as part of our Design Technology project having already produced some excellent Roman serpent bracelets linked to Art. We are very lucky to have Mr Ward next half-term for our PE lessons!

Learning literally never stops in Q4. Time for a rest now, but we have lots to look forward to when we come back. Quick message for the children - don't forget your homework activities and do your best to read five times to be in with a chance of winning a book! Have a great half term, you deserve it!

See you next week!

Introduction to multiplication , by Mr Houltram

Date: 11th Oct 2016 @ 9:33pm

We are about to tackle lots of work on multiplication and division. To get our brains in gear we enjoyed lots of different approaches to multiplication. Who had known that there were so many enjoyable ways to master multiplication? Check us in action!

Week five, by Mr Houltram

Date: 7th Oct 2016 @ 4:20pm

As always in Q4 we have been super-busy. The week got off to a great start with us going to Langtree Park for our Sky-Try experience. We were put through our paces with some of the academy players, passing and tackling. We had a tour of the stadium and also explored the ‘Eat-well Plate’ – it’s really important to have a balanced diet!

In English this week, we have been exploring newspaper reports. We are reporting on an incident that has left poor Duncan’s bedroom in a right state. A box of crayons appear to be the culprits! We explored the features of a newspaper and have written and edited our lead paragraph.

In Maths we have been solving some tricky two-step problems that involve more than one operation. We are gaining confidence with these and some of us are able to represent the answer using a bar model too!

Guided Reading has really taken off this week and we are really enjoying our text, ‘Esio Trot’ – what a funny name for a book. Read it backwards and it may make more sense! We are getting better and better at between-the-lines questions, finding clues in the text. One thing’s for sure, Mr Hoppy will go to great lengths to get what he wants!

A huge well done to; Emily, Izzy, Sophie, Ruby, Alicia, Maddison, Peaches, Zach, Abigail and Jia, who all scored 100% on their spellings. Jayden was our Star Badge winner, whilst Peaches and Ruby topped our Dojo charts. Mathhew is the first winner of our Maths Star trophy after getting 100% on our end of unit test. You’re all Superstars and Mr Houltram is very proud of you.

Lastly, we wish Zach a very happy 9th Birthday on Saturday. We hope you have lots of fun!

That’s all from us this week. See you next week.

Week Three , by Mr Houltram

Date: 23rd Sep 2016 @ 2:52pm

Week three is over – where is the time going? The children have once again done me very proud this week. Mrs Kellett and Mrs Platt were invited to our English lesson on Wednesday, and they were most impressed by Q4’s attitude, desire and commitment to their learning. Well done!

We have been busy writing a letter to those grumpy crayons. We spent the week planning and editing our letters, before finally writing it today, we really enjoyed being Duncan, and we hope those poor crayons forgive us for working them so hard (or not at all!)

In our maths we have been working on column additions and subtractions with four-digit numbers. We are so good at them that we can exchange, and even solve missing number problems – there’s just no end to our talents!

For our science topic this week we looked at the characteristics of various organisms ranging from a seahorse, who has an ocean habitat, to a toucan who lives in the rainforest. We used the information we had gathered to create our very own classification key.

Our Spelling Stars this week include: Emily, Sophie, Ruby, Boo, Alicia, Zach, Alexia and Matthew, who all scored full marks. Matthew and Maddison have topped the Dojo charts for the week, whilst Alexia won our Star Badge. All are very worthy winners, and excellent role-models for Q4.

Just a couple of last things before we go. A big Happy 9th Birthday to Peaches who is 9 on Saturday! We would also like to wish Emily lots of luck who is competing in a Triathlon on Saturday for charity – what an amazing thing to do. We are very proud of you.

See you next week!

I think we've earned this weekend! , by Mr Houltram

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 8:11pm

Wow! Q4 will sleep very well this weekend. What a week of learning it's been!

We are still busy with four-digit numbers and can now round to 10, 100 and 1000. Not only that, but we can also find 1000 more or less for four-digit numbers. We have been looking at sequences of 7, 9, 25 and 1000 and have even been  solving some tricky word problems!

We tucked into our new text and now know what all the fuss was about. Duncan has been working those crayons too hard. We used thesauruses to think of synonyms for how tired and angry they were. Some of the words we found included: livid, fragile, rickety, lethargic, frustrated, enraged... The list goes on. Some of us even included the word 'apoplectic' in our fact-files! (It means angry incase you didn't know) ;)

If that wasn't enough, we started our new History topic 'The Romans'. We explored the legend of 'Romulus and Remus' and the story about the birth of Rome. We created some fantastic storyboards to depict the story.

This week was also the first week of spellings! A huge well done to Abigail, Enola, Maddison, Matthew, Ruby, Sophie and Zach, who all scored 100%!!

Our Star Badge Winner this week was Daigen, who has shown a fantastic attitude towards all aspects of learning. Daigen also earned the most Dojos along with Izzy. Well done to you both!

And relax... It's the weekend and we can all enjoy a well-earned rest. Don't forget to check back next week to see what we've been up to!

Until then, it's bye from Q4! :)

What a start to Q4!, by Mr Houltram

Date: 9th Sep 2016 @ 3:08pm

Well what a week it’s been in Q4 this week. Learning has literally not stopped!

In English we have been introduced to our new text ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. We haven’t read it yet but we have been exploring the front cover to predict what it may be about – one thing’s for sure, those crayons are pretty grumpy about something!

In Maths we have been working with four-digit numbers. We can now recognise the place value of each digit and can even order and compare numbers beyond a 1000. Check out our photos to see us in action!

In Science we have started our topic ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. Using the mnemonic ‘MRS GREN’ we now know the seven life processes. We started our topic by grouping living things (this is called classifying) We can now group organisms in a Venn or a Carroll diagram. We have also been looking at vertebrates (organisms with a backbone), and we were able to classify different organisms using a classification key– aren’t we clever!

After all our hard work, sometimes it’s nice to chill and some of us got the chance to read in Mr Houltram’s new ‘chill-out zone.

A huge well done to Kacey who was our Star Badge winner. Maddison topped our Dojo chart. It truly has been a super start to Q4 - well done everybody!

The week has gone so quick but we can’t wait for next week to learn so much more!

predict what it may be about – one thing’s for sure, those crayons are pretty grumpy about something!

On Friday we read the blurb and learned a bit more about the crayons and why they’re so cranky! We enjoyed empathising with the crayons and Mr Houltram filmed some of our responses. It will certainly help us next week when we finally get to hear what the big fuss is all about.

In Maths we have been working with four-digit numbers. We can now recognise the place value of each digit and can even order and compare numbers beyond a 1000. On Friday we were able to solve some problems involving four-digit numbers. Check out our photos to see us in action!

After all our hard work, sometimes it’s nice to chill and some of us got the chance to read in Mr Houltram’s new ‘Chill-out Zone’.

Congratulations to our Star Badge winner Kacey Zhelyaskova and a big Well Done also to Maddison Howard who earned the most Dojos this week.

It truly has been a super start to our brand new year of learning!

Nous aimons le rugby!, by Mrs Taylor

Date: 15th Jun 2016 @ 12:07pm

Today Q4 had some very exciting visitors as part of our international sports project. Saints prop forward Levy Nzoungou came with the Saints development officers to help us to practice our French and rugby skills. The children sang to Levy in French , spoke some sentences so that he could comment on their accents and asked him questions about life in France. We then went onto the field where coaches Gaz and Dan put us through our paces with core rugby skills. A representative from the Rugby League also came for the visit and as a French speaker himself he praised the children's accents, intonation and confidence. Well done Q4!

Chinese Visitors in Y4, by Mrs Taylor

Date: 5th May 2016 @ 5:31pm

Today we welcomed Paris and Bonita to Y4 to teach us Mandarin language and about the Chinese Zodiac. Some quotes from the children were "My favourite bit was when I learned what my name was in Chinese" and "I would now like to make full out Chinese conversations."
