Year 5 made lanterns and dragons to celebrate the occasion.
A big thank you to Mrs Connor and Miss Bates, who have transformed our corridor using the children's crafts.

Library Visit, by Mrs Atherton
Date: 2nd Feb 2016 @ 7:26pm
A big thank you to Mandy and Catherine, at St.Helens Central Library, for hosting the Holocaust session for Year 5 today. The children were given a brief overview of the Holocaust and the impact of this on the Jewish population. They learned about Dr Janus Korczak, who tried to save the Jewish orphans, and how he went to the concentration camp with them. He believed in the rights of children and was the founder of the Convention for the Rights of the Child, which has since been adopted by many countries worldwide.
In the second half of our session, Mandi shared some pages from The Unforgotten Coat, which was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, about two boys from Mongolia.
We will be reading this book after half term, please feel free to read this together at home.
Mrs Atherton and Miss Stubbs were very impressed with the children's questions and answers during the session.

Skype call to Australia. , by Mrs Atherton
Date: 14th Jan 2016 @ 4:06pm
Mrs Taylor organised a special event for Year 5 as part of their Arts Fortnight focus on Australia, she arranged for a teacher in Australia to receive a Skype call from us. After a couple of technical hiccups and issues with their 11 hour time difference, the connection was finally established, then the children were able to ask questions about Australia and the Stolen Generation. Mr Jackson was a very informative and entertaining visitor to our class. The children loved it, as did the staff.
The Stolen Generation is a topic that has amazed and shocked the classes, ask them at home to tell you about this part of Australian History.
I would like to personally thank Mrs Taylor for her enthusiasm setting this event up and Miss Hughes for organising the Skype account (teamwork is a wonderful thing).

Elf mischief, by Mrs Atherton
Date: 9th Dec 2015 @ 2:33pm
The elves, in Y5, have been up to lots of mischief and have kept the children entertained. They have disorganised the pencil pots, been sticking 'selfies' around the classroom and turning up the most unexpected places.
On Monday there was great concern as the children discovered that the elves had lost their magic because they had been touched by human hands. After reasearching some Christmas films, the children decided to fill the elves with Christmas Spirit by creating a Christmas grotto and sending messages that they believe in elves to help the magic return. Thankfully, on Tuesday morning, the magic had been restored to the elves and little envelopes of Christmas jokes were left as a thank you by the elves.

Crucial Crew, by Mrs Atherton
Date: 20th Oct 2015 @ 7:03pm
The Year 5 children have been a credit to the school today attending the Crucial Crew event at Langtree Park. Miss Stubbs and Mrs Atherton would like to express how very proud we were of their behaviour.
Below is a brief overview of their day, please ask your children what they have learned in their workshops.
Crucial Crew 20th October, 2015
Year 5 attended six workshops at Crucial Crew, these were:
- Road safety.
- E-safety.
- Accidents in the home.
- Fire safety.
- Train safety.
- The Ranger service.
In the road safety session, the children attended a ‘RTA’ (road traffic accident), they had to investigate what had happened and infer the possible causes of the accident. They then decided what steps could be taken to avoid this type of accident happening again.
For E-Safety, the children watched a video that highlighted the dangers of the internet, they then discussed how they could stay safe on line and what to do if they ever felt unsafe.
The children were also made aware of how to identify hazards that could cause accidents in the home. They were taught how to make an emergency call and what numbers to call for emergency and non-emergency (999 and 101). Hoax calls were explained as a waste of time and resources.
The Fire Department showed a ‘mock-up’ video of a boy being injured on Bonfire night, this was based on a true story. They then discussed the dangers of fireworks and the children were made aware of STOP, DROP and ROLL if clothing catches fire.
The British Transport Police explained the best ways to cross rail tracks, such as bridges or subways, the group used the models to spot dangers around train tracks. At a railway station, the importance of staying behind the yellow line was explained. Photographs that showed damage from stone throwing were given to the children to make them think of consequences of actions.
The Ranger Service explained all the services that the Rangers provide and gave the children an awareness of hazards that may arise in local parks, such as: not swimming in ponds or lakes, fires, strangers, needles or syringes, broken glass and litter and climbing trees.
